Pakistani talent has been hogging the limelight these past few months in various fields ranging from science to film making. This past week has similar news hitting the headlines from the realms of photography.

Three Pakistani photographers have been shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards. The Sony World Photography Awards are the world’s biggest photography competition. Organized by the World Photography Organization, being shortlisted for this competition is a photographer’s dream.

The three immensely talented photographs are Kumail Rizvi, Shahzad Khan and Zohaib Tariq. They have been listed in the top ten of their respective youth award categories. The youth competition of the Sony World Photography Awards is for photographers who are 19 years or below of age.

Kumail Rizvi

Kumail Rizvi was shortlisted in the Youth Environment category for his photograph named “Human Made Environment”, which is an aerial view of a car park in Malaysia.

Shahzad Khan

Shahzad Khan, a resident of Islamabad was shortlisted in the Youth Portraits category of the event for his photo called “Awal Gul”. The photo is an all-encompassing close up of a child on the outskirts of the Islamabad.

Zohaib Tariq

Zohaib Tariq, hailing from Islamabad, studying at HITEC University Taxila, has been shortlisted for his photograph titled “Pakistan” in the Youth Culture category. The photograph depicts local farmers herding their animals.

Sony’s World Photography Awards – The Mother of all Awards

A yearly event, the Sony World Photography Awards is where all photographers aim to be. The event has three competition tracks with each track further segregated into photo categories:

  1. Open
  2. Professional
  3. And youth competitions

The current year has seen a record breaking number of entries with 230,103 submissions from contestants spanning 186 countries.

These huge numbers can in part be due to the 137+ percent increase in entries from Pakistan. This increase was so phenomenal that it was mentioned in a separate statement by the awards committee.

As our country men are shortlisted in the youth categories of the event we would like to mention that the Youth Photographer of 2016 will be given a share in $30,000 prize money and will be flown to the Awards Exhibition in London.

The judges have shortlisted 10 photographs per category. They will now choose one Youth Photographer of the Year and one winner per category within the main category.

Each category winner will also get a free Sony product and have their photographs published in the winners’ book and the online exhibition.

The announcement of the winners will be made on the following dates based on the category:

  • 15th March, 2016: National Awards winners
  • 29th March, 2016: Open & Youth winners
  • 21st April, 2016: Photographer of the Year; Overall Open, Youth and Professional category winners
  • 22nd April, 2016 to 8th May, 2016: Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition will take place at Somerset House, London
