The second coming of Prophet Isa/ Jesus (peace be upon him) is one of the major signs to appear before the Day of Judgment.  Muslims and Christians believe that Prophet Isa/ Jesus (peace be upon him) will be sent back to our world before the judgment day and he will perform certain tasks.

The Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the smoke; the False Messiah; the Beast; the sun rising from the West; the descent of Jesus son of Mary; the Gog and Magog; and three tremors – one in the East, one in the West, and one in Arabia, at the end of which fire will burst forth from the direction of Aden and drive people to the place of their final assembly.” (Musnad Imam Ahmed)

The Second Coming of Jesus (Peace be upon him) according to the Quran

There are two ayahs in the Qur’an, which are considered to be an indication of the second coming of Prophet Isa (peace be upon him):

There shall not be anyone from People of the Book, but shall believe in him before his death and on the Day of Resurrection, he (Jesus) shall be a witness against them.” (Quran 4: 159)

Most scholars take the above verse to mean that before the death of Jesus (peace be upon him) at the end of time, the people of the book will have the correct belief in him, i.e. that he is no more than one of the greatest messengers of God.

And (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming of) the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt about the (Hour), but follow ye Me: this is a Straight Way.” (Quran 43: 61)

What Prophet (SAW) said about the second coming of Jesus (Peace be upon him)?

Similar to the Qur’an, there are several ahadith, which mention the second coming of Prophet Isa/Jesus.

God will send the Messiah, son of Mary, who will descend at the white minaret on the eastern side of Damascus wearing two garments, lightly dyed with saffron, his hands resting on the wings of two Angels.  When he lowers his head, beads of perspiration will fall from it, and when he raises it up, beads like pearls will scatter from it.  Every non-believer who smells him will die, and his breath will reach as far as he is able to see.” (Muslim)

Abu Huraira narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “How will you be when the son of Maryam (i.e. Prophet Isa (peace be upon him)) descends amongst you, and he will judge people by the Law of the Qur’an and not by the law of Gospel!” (Bukhari)

The Prophet (SAW) said: “There is no prophet between me and him, that is, Isa ((peace be upon him.). He (Isa ((peace be upon him)) will descend (to the earth). When you see him, recognize him: a man of medium height, reddish fair, wearing two light yellow garments, looking as if drops were falling down from his head though it will not be wet. He will fight the people for the Cause of Islam. He will break the cross, kill swine, and abolish jizyah. Allah will perish all religions except Islam. He will destroy the Ad-Dajjal and will live on the earth for forty years and then he will die. The Muslims will pray over him.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)

Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said, “By Him in Whose Hand is my life; Ibn Maryam (Isa ((peace be upon him)) would certainly pronounce Talbiyah for Hajj or for Umrah or for both in the valley of Rawha.”(Muslim)

Abdullah ibn Amr narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: ‘The Dajjal will appear in my Ummah and he will stay (in the world) for forty—(I cannot say whether he meant forty days, forty months or forty years.)  Allah will then send Isa ((peace be upon him), son of Maryam, who will chase the Dajjal and kill him.” (Muslim)

The Prophet (SAW) said, “A section of my people will not cease fighting for truth and will prevail till the Day of Resurrection.” He said: “Jesus son of Mary would then descend and their (Muslims’) commander (ameer) would ask him to come and lead them in prayer, but he would say: ‘No, some amongst you are commanders over some (amongst you).’” This is the honor from God for this Ummah.” (Muslim).

Then, a people whom God had protected will come to Jesus, son of Mary, and he will wipe their faces and inform them of their ranks in Paradise.” (Muslim)

There may be different views on the second coming of Jesus, what we, as Muslims, should focus on is that return of Prophet Isa is also a major sign of the day of judgment. We should be scurrying to prepare for it.
