For the past few weeks, Indian held Kashmir is entangled in a profound state of war. Following the death of Kashmiri rebel leader, Burhan Wani on 8th July 2016, around 50 civilians have been killed. Subsequently, the world doesn’t know about it. Amid all this, Pakistani social activist Muhammed Jibran Nasir has created one powerful campaign for Kashmiris that has taken the Internet world by storm.

The notion of the social media campaign was to bring the very issue of Kashmir in the limelight. The title of the campaign is ‘What if you knew the Victim? #IndiaCantSee #LetKashmirDecide’ and it is published under ‘Never Forget Pakistan’ – a welfare society which works to create positive narratives and do advocacy on human rights.

According to Jibran Nasir, familiar faces were used to put the state of Kashmir in perspective. The campaign illustrates what popular celebrities, including Indian actors, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, would look like if attacked with pellets.

Team behind the campaign stated a note on Facebook:

“The stories in the letters are real. The names signed under the letter are real. Just the victim you see in the picture is not real. You know these faces. Does that make the tragedies more important? Why do we need to glamorize a tragedy in order for people to pay attention”

Objective of the campaign

The purpose of this campaign is to let the world know about the sufferings of Kashmiris regardless of their nationalities. It is also against the way Indian Police is using ‘pellet guns’ to blind hundreds of Kashmiris.

In the absence of any eminent coverage from international media, Pakistanis and Kashmiris have resorted to using social media channels to raise awareness. However, Facebook is found to be censoring posts especially if they are about Kashmir.

The social media platform recently deactivated actor Hamza Ali Abbasi’s FB account for 3 days since he raised voice for Kashmiris.
