The Knock-Out Punch – Amir Khan is NOT Pakistani!

Amir

Roaring cheers!!!!! Spotlight!! The man, Amir Khan walks to the ring in the midst of a huge uproar. The song ‘Eye of the Tiger’ playing in the background. Stepping into the ring he eyes his opponent Zab Judah.

The bell rings, Ding, Ding, Ding!! A blow here and a blow there, one round after another and finally POW! The End! Judah crumples as a result of a powerful body shot by Amir Khan and is knocked out.

The crowd roars again….this Paki bloke has done it! Amir Khan’s trainer runs in with a life-size Pakistani Flag which Amir waves over his head and shouts PAKISTAN ZINDABAD!!!!

Ummmm…yeah right!! The only thing green in the ring this past Saturday were Amir’s knickers.

NO! NO! I don’t have anything against Amir Khan. He’s good boxer. In fact he has it in him to be great! 27 fights – 26 wins and 18 knock outs – all by the age of 24 is amazing.

What I’ve been laughing about all of last week was the kind of coverage this boy has gotten in Pakistan. He has been portrayed as the Pakistani “Rocky” and another one of Pakistan’s contribution to the world of sports.

There have been posters and adverts and what not. Does anyone even know anything about this guy other than that his parents were Pakistani? I doubt that many do. Acha! You do? Ok, name the title he lost in the only match he has ever lost. And don’t ask Chacha Google please!

Honestly speaking neither did I, but this sudden barrage of the ‘PAKISTANI boxing champion’ made me curious. So here’s a fact list for you people:

  • Fact #1: He boxes for the UNITED KINGDOM. Yes, they ruled over us for around 200 years, but that does not make us one of them.
  • Fact #2: Look at his wiki profile and Pakistan appears in only two places. One where it mentions that he has a Pakistani background and the other that he distributed aid to people affected by the 2005 earthquake.
  • Fact #3: He was born and raised in Bolton, England and his nationality column says BRITISH!

I remember this Bollywood flick in which Katrina Kaif is seen telling a friend “I was born here (UK), I have lived here all my life, since the age of three I have been singing the British national anthem…I am not Indian but British”…this is the same case with this bloke. Born, raised, educated and trained in the UK.

Need I say more? This guy is as Pakistani as the brand Suzuki.

My opinion here is that it’s not the common Pakistani who’s to blame. The common Pakistani doesn’t even care about boxing. It’s the media that’s created the hype.

Bhai! Having the broadcasting rights to the match and the most popular news channel (read GEO) as a sister concern does not mean that you mislead people just for ratings!

  1. He actually is a Pakistani, a piece of paper does not change your blood. Doesn’t matter where in the world we live, or what generation we are, Pakistan will always be our homeland PERIOD.

By that very same analogy you’ve written, do remember to call those people BRITISH when your own home grown BRITISH terrorists decide to blow up your underground or decide to drive a SUV into one of your airports. Oh but then they’re Pakistani right?

The double standards of people never ceases to amaze me.

  2. Lets not forget pakistan is one of the most messed up countries in the world. The insecurity complex and hatred amongst the people is rediculous. Only the poor are decent, the rest are sub-human garbage

  3. Amir Khan ready to assist Pakistani boxers

ISLAMABAD: WBA champion Amir Khan has announced that he is ready to assist Pakistani boxers, especially in the run up to the 2012 London Olympics.

Khan, who defeated Zad Judah of the US on Saturday night in Las Vegas, said he was in talks with Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) President Doda Khan about the prospect of hosting five boxers in Bolton, England.

He said he had a special place in his heart for Pakistan and was ready to assist the sport in the country.

“I’ll do whatever I can to help Pakistan boxing,” said Khan.

“I’m in touch with the PBF President Doda Khan and I’m ready to provide any assistance,” he said while adding that the Pakistan boxers will be trained at his academy in UK ahead of the London Olympics qualifiers.

“We’ll be extending our boxing facility to Pakistan during the camp.”

The boxer also hinted at visiting the Pakistan during the second edition of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Boxing event in October.

“I’d like to visit Pakistan every year or twice a year and this time I’m likely to come after Ramazan.”

‘King Khan’ added that he felt proud over representing England and Pakistan.

“Along with England, I also represent Pakistan and it is a great achievement for me. People ask me and I say I am a British Pakistani and that’s a great feeling.”

  4. Mr writer it is better if your apologies your ignorance in your next column. other wise reply to my above comment.

  5. His younger brother Haroon Iqbal Khan has represented Pakistan in Commonwealth game, most of the British public know about this and it was in the media as well. ( comeon ,one brother representing England and one Pakistan shows a very close connection to his motherland). So Mr writer please do little bit more research before sharing your views.

  6. he is Pakistani or not it doesn’t matter is he is muslim and he rocks… and he make us all muslims proud same as muhammad ali did

  7. What a BIASED article!!! Muhammad Ali is treated as a hero in Africa, he was an American by Nationality. SO??? why did you even write this article?

  8. In this fast communication era ignorant still never try to double check the facts.
Even when someone’s Chacha Google is at every door. I don’t know how easily people start spreading misinformation in the veil of so called Information.
Brother Absar Katrina Kaif born in Hong Kong not in UK She lives only “3” years not whole life in UK, most of the life she spent in Hawaii and visited many other countries” . Can someone imagine till this site is up, who is going to stop spreading this misinformation of Katrina Kaif and hate/jealousy/racism/ignorance for Khan??

Amir Khan has absolutely no support from the indigenous UK population as he openly fought under a Pakistani flag
Amir Khan and his dad appeared in the ring with a Pakistani flag for his first couple of fights until they realized that to UK and probably more importantly US sponsors/TV networks this would not make him marketable.

Source: see Richard Ingram comments written more than a year ago : http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=137779392033&topic=14592#topic_top

before 2 years Amir khan the 22-year-old insisted he has suffered from racial bigotry and said: “If I were a white English fighter maybe I’d have been a superstar.”
in reply to those comments Amir said: I’m proud to be British and it’s a very small minority but it does hurt you and it pushes you all the way.(haters will also got the answer from this article.)

    source:http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/8396760.stm

within 2 years Khan proved he is a loyal brit and becomes a superstar in Britain and now he is trying to promote his heritage country “Pakistan “in open by wearing green and white knickers and also let his whole management to wear the same Pakistani colour including his American trainer Freddy(real good and cool guy like bob Woolmer).

Dear Absar England Gave him chance in Olympics when he was only 17.so that’s why he must have to use his Brit passport. Now does it make sense that he is not Pakistani even if he have Pakistani Passport too??
Do you have any idea that Khan has an army? And his army flag is consisted of Pakistani and Brit Flag .
Regarding Media Hype Geo spends hell of money to broadcast a live box fight. and i don’t have any knowledge when last time a Pakistani TV shows the live world box(any weight) championship.
Only ignorant people think they know the best. Amir name been on Pakistani media long ago before your notice.

if someone still feel or act like a ignorant or racist then tell me.

Allama Iqbal dead 1938 before the creation of Pakistan. Why you still call him Pakistani poet? moreover…saray jahan say acha hindustan hamara written by Allama Iqbal. Allama Iqbal is Pakistani?

Dr. Abdus Salam(1926-1996) only Pakistani scientist who got Noble prize, left Pakistan in 1972 in protest when Pakistan Parliament passed a parliamentary bill declaring Ahmadiyya as Non-Muslims and never came back. Person who kicked Pakistan was(1999) mentioned as a great Pakistani scientist in the book of physics of 9th . despite religion is he NOT PAKIATANI?

Naida Ali,Imran Khan,Bohemia these all singers are not Pakistani?

i still remember when i was in 10th class , my school(Pakistani international school Jeddah) fellows visited Pakistan. they were representing Saudi Arabia against Pakistan in i think under 16 cricket team. mean Pakistanis vs Pakistanis both sides with same country passports but represented 2 countries. now tell me among them who are Pakistani?

i tried my best to give you all possibilities without using disgrace full and 18+ words. Only because to get answer “Who is Pakistani” “What is Pakistani by definition” if all of above are not Pakistanis then who is Pakistani? only you?

    Stop destruction and start construction
    stop dividing and start uniting
Waiting for your positive reply Mr Absar.

  9. We know he is not pakistani but still he support pakistan by wearing pak flag colour shorts and after winning against judah ,Amir said that pakistani boxer use his gym and training center in uk whenever they want without any cost and one more important thing Amir khans brother Haroon khan represent pakistan as a boxer in commonwealth games and won medal for pakistan

  10. To me you are not Pakistani writer, well i dont care where he is from.. he is carrying Pakistani flags in all fights.. we think he is Pakistani he loves Pakistan.. He is devoted Muslim……END OF THE STORY.

  11. I have seen him in Pakistan, he was the chief guest in Benazir Bhutto boxing tournament , held in benazir bhutto sports complex in Karachi. and it was before Amir vs Juda’s fights

  12. This is rediculous, I was born and bred in the UK but I love Pakistan and think about her everyday. He is a great fighter and is something positive for Pakistan, something which brings her respect rather than shame like so many of our beautiful politicians. You should respect that. I am outraged by the tone of this article.

  13. this nation is going through their hardest time ever they had in thier lives and at some stage if they try to feel themselves comfortable and want to forget some of their sorrows and pain which they have in their lives and to enjoy those moments but people like you inshallah will never allow this nation to be happy . shame on this article……….

  14. Mr abassi u are one of many losers who even dont wish to applaud talent,,,,,,,,,,, just stop writing otherwise soon you will stop coming out of ur home…….lolzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  15. He is son of a pakistani… so Pakistan’s blood flow through his veins… and people are recognized by their parents…. since his parents pakistani so he has deep relation with pakistan too… n i have a question y are geting so much jealous of his coverage and fame?

  16. Hi Guys,
Can any one tell this writer that amir’s younger brother represent Pakistan in commonwealth games this year in India. Khan’s younger brother Haroon is on Pakistan’s pay role and Khan’s whole family is true Pakistani. I would not say more than this that Mr Absar should consult the Chacha google and find out more facts about him and if he thinks its hard for him to find than tell me I would help him.lolzzzzzz

  17. if your biological parents are from Pakistan then your automatically a Pakistani plus sorry to break your bubble but ur knowledge in nationality issues is very limited

  18. deaR writer…have you ever heard the word ‘dual nationality’? if not than please open up the dictionary because u seriously need some knowledge doses…we have millions of people who were born n brought up in different countries and having both nationalities…the second natioanlity is to just get a social secruity….how dare you compare amir khan with a 2 koorii k katrina kaif??? you seriously need to grow up big time…i think amir khan might be a person with a Pakistani bakground but to me YOU ARE A PERSON WITH INDIAN BACKGROUND JO HUR WAKT HUM SEY JALTEY OR SARTEY REHTEY HEN!! AND I WANT YOU TO REPLY BACK TO MY COMMENT WITH A STRONG JUSTIFICATION OF THE CRAP THAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN IF YOU HAVE THE GUTSS….I THINK WRITERS LIKE YOU JUST WRITE SH*T BECAUSE THEY CANNOT COME UP WITH SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE…

  19. are you stupid dont u see a big paki flag on his shorts seriously are you blind then his dad says hes a paki then AKz family in pakistan supports him seriously dont write article if you dont know shi*

  20. Dear Writer,

well everyone prefers British nationality over Pakistani….. Y 1 should hold notorious passport and reduce his own privileges… we all know that he is British Nationality holder but this doesn’t mean that his ancestors are not Pakistani…. he himself claims that i represent both countries….. moreover even UK residents know that he have got affiliations with Pakistan….. If you remember Cricket 2011 final, Amir khan (bollywood star) witnessed the match and when Ravi Shastri said “oh Amir Khan is also here” the Ian Chappel reply was “which Amir khan, the PAKISTANI BOXER” and Ravi shyly replied “No, the Indian actor”
So get some lyf and use your energies elsewhere……. He is British but his ethnicity is Pakistani

  21. Absaar
I have read all the above comments.
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha … :/ :/ :/ lol ….. That was really funny :P
    No offence
    Regards
    Sanwal

  22. Mr writer you do not know sufficiently regarding Amir Khan and consequently have enought to support you article. We should not be say what ever comes in our minds.

First of all we shud all give him credit and respect for representing british Pakistani boxer and his love for Pakistan.

He is more loyal to Pakistan probably most of us Pakistani are these days, who do not care one bit about there mother land. For someone who is born n brough in UK and with so much success is humble enough with all his diversity and associate all the time with Pakistan in all the ways he can. He does not need any publicity because he world known already.

Its about time mr writer you should think twice before you write an article. We would expect from you a lot more responsible attitude. And just to let you know i am a Pakistani living in UK

    Thanks All

  23. I disagree wd the writer…. Khuda ka shuker ada karo k wo khud ko pakistani-British kehta he sab k samnay or is pe proud krta he, warna ajkal tho log pakistan k name se he bhagte he… Or us ne kaha he k “my younger brother wl represent Pakistan”… Or kya chahye Mr Writer??? U r totaly wrong… 100% wrong…. We love him and consider him a pride for pakistan and u r jealous of him…

  24. he is not a pakistani he neither does claim that…. his parents are pakistani and so he regards pakistan and its people for there support….
plus he is a muslim point enough to support him…
    GET A LIFE

  25. IF U BORN IN ENGLAND AND IF U HAVE DUAL NATIONALITY AND IF U REPRESENT ENGLAND THROUGHOUT UR CAREER … IT DOESNT MEAN AT ALL THAT U ARE NOT PAKISTANI ORIGINALLY !!! HIS MOTHERLAND AND FATHERLAND IS PAKISTAN. HIS FAMILY ORIGINATED FROM KAHUTA RAWALPINDI ……. SO IF AMIR KHAN REPRESENT BRITISH , THEN IT IS HIS CHOICE AND HE HAS THE RIGHT TO REPRESENT ENGLAND BCZ HE GOT THE NATIONALITY.

FOR ALL OF U GUYS I WANNA TELL U ONE MORE THING THAT AMIR KHAN’s BROTHER “HAROON KHAN” REPRESENTED HIMSELF AS PAKISTANI AT THE 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India. HE WON THE FIRST BRONZE MEDAL FOR PAKISTAN IN THE DELHI COMMONWEALTH GAMES LAST YEAR…..

  26. lol… nice way to show represent your narrow mind…
well amir khan is a born pakistani…
and he has his talent of paki soil..
something ALLAH has blessed to this nation,,, one of them is bravery and strength and thats wat Amir Khan is all about
if ur giving all the credit to UK for their training and grooming him up
then u r a bigtime looser that… coz if that is so then UK trainers would be raising a amir khan’s duet boxer every single month or alteast an year…

    so get a life dude… and grow up… actually a lot…

  27. hmmm….
what you describe is all truth
i think pakistani knows all about him that he born studies and grown up in uk.
he has pakistani background as his parints belongs to pakistan
All above mentioned things does not matter at all at least he is a muslim.
he is a british and has no anti pakistani feelings.
at least he is friend of pakistanies he visit pakistan and help needy people in earthquake2005
is this not enouph for pakistanies to just support him in his matches???????
    what do you think???

  28. Oh just noticed one thing, according to the write people don’t know much about him so they shouldn’t support him ? ( I had a totally different and more appropriate argument for not supporting him). Frankly all your reasoning is just stupid.

And giving that” Google Chacha” thingy in this article actually shows that you probably used it a lot because of your rather retarded points.

  29. With all due respect, being born in and raised in the UK does not make him any more british than a cuckoo living amidst sparrows makes him any more of a sparrow.
for one, he chose to respresent, because, face it…in a country like a pakistan, with people who are set on trying to kill talent, who would know him? how many boxing legends do you know from pakistan?
Katrina’s example just proves how shallow her love for her country was, and our country, at the peak of its notoriety, still is a source of pride for him. he does not need our support. there are enough fans, and there is enough cash in the UK. but the fact that he chose to associate himself to Pakistan, when he could easily have detached himself from everything, makes me respect him tenfold.
We should just stop being so cynical and expound on the good things, like we always do on the bad.

    1. Whoa! Looks like I unintentially stepped on a whole lotta toes there!

Folks… I am sincerely sorry if I caused any grief to any of you…

Firstly, please let me clarify that I do not hold any sort of a grudge against Amir Khan… I gotta hand it to him… the guy is great! It’s an amazing feat in and of itself to become one of the top contendors in the world of boxing today… but on top of that, this kid comes from a community that is not traditionally associated with boxing. Boxing is traditionally home to men of black/Latino heritage… and these communities often encourage their youth towards such sports…. but not so in the Indian/Pakistani communities… So this boy defied all odds (both physical and psychological) in order to get where he is today…. so it really is a Cinderella story… he is a true world champion… a real ‘Rocky’.

I have been heavily involved with boxing and martial arts for much of my life… so he is also a source of inspiration to me… as I’m sure he is to millions of youth around the world…. and I think its great that he finally offers a positive Muslim role model for so many Muslim youth (both Pakistani and non-Pakistani)… God knows we need some inspiration in these times…

However… I just wanted to send out a little wake-up call to some of our fellow Pakistanis who get a bit emotional when any such news breaks… At the end of the day he was born and brought up in Britain, he was schooled in Britain, he trained as a boxer in Britain, and at least till recently he’s always defined himself as a British boxer… So does he really represent us Pakistanis, the quality of our boxing, or Pakistan in general??

Up to each of us to decide for ourselves… No real right or wrong opinion here…

Thanks again for your (mostly) wonderful comments..

      Absar.

  30. Mr. Writer, I think everybody knows he’s British and has a Pakistani background and they still support him, why are you so jealous of the coverage he’s getting?

  31. Ammar Hussain

    Dear

I give solid reason for negating that he is not pakistani.

i donot know he is pakistani or not so i didnot claim anything about its nationality.

you think so that he is not pakistani but your arguments didnot convince anyone about your statement.

    Ammar Hussain Sidhu

    1. If he is not a PAkistani….
      Its not a Problem…
But WE will Proud Because He is a Muslim….!!
And He Fight with a AMerican in AMerica…!
      ANd He Won…!
And He Rules All Over the World..!
      Get Lost…
      Jeolous People…!

  32. You can’t just put all the blame on GEO, people need to think for themselves ( most can’t is totally another issue). The only reason the whole country is dying for Amir Khan is that we don’t have any sporting HERO of our own, so we are trying to associate ourselves with this British bloke to feel good about ourselves.

And he infact rejected Pakistan when he had the chance to represent us, yes that was his decision and he probably made the right decision as he was born and raised in Bolton, England not in Pakistan. But all this love for Pakistan now ? Well mate you should have thought about it when you had the chance to represent Pakistan. Now stop cashing in on Pakistan’s name.

A case of ” Aik teer se do shikar” LOL

    1. “”And he in fact rejected Pakistan when he had the chance to represent us””
can you please give me source of this statement?
