In a recent development, China will provide 8 submarines to Pakistan Navy over a period of next 11 years. Four submarines will be constructed in China and they would be provided to Pakistan in the mid of 2022-23. Remaining 4 subs will be constructed in Karachi Shipyard and they will be handed over to Pakistan in 2028.

The news was stated by the Chief Project Director of Submarine while briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defense during the committee’s visit to the Naval Headquarters here on Friday. The director also presented a comprehensive overview of the upcoming challenges along with providing a road map for the future.

Chief of the Naval Staff at the Naval Headquarters welcomed Shaikh Rohail Asghar who was heading the committee.

The committee members were briefed about the potential security challenges in the region. Moreover, the role of Pakistan Navy in safeguarding Pakistan’s maritime interest and national building was also explained.

On the other hand, the committee expressed their delight at the deal. The committee also stated that the responsibilities of Pakistan Navy have increased by and large especially in connection with the construction of $46 billion CPEC project.

Background of the deal

China and Pakistan finalized a deal to purchase 8 modified Type 41 Yuan-class diesel-electric attack submarines from China in 2015. Excluding the air-independent propulsion system, the export designation is S20. The Yuan-class SSK has a submerged displacement of 3600 tons.

Minister for Defense Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain announced this deal on 11th October 2015.

The committee made couple of recommendations to the federal government. They asked them to provide the necessary funds to Pakistan Navy in order to meet its future requirements and challenges.

Besides officers of the Defense Ministry, the members of the committee who attended the meeting included, Tahir Bashir Cheema, Isphanyar M. Bhandara, Mir Dostan Dhomki, Ms. Surriya Asghar, Sardar Muhammed Shafqat Hayat Khan, Lt. Col. (Retd) Ghulam Rasul Sahi, Saeed Ahmed Khan Manais, Muhammed Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, Nawab Ali Wassan, Syed Mustafa Mehmud, Malik Muhammed Amir Dogar, Sanjay Perwani and Muhammed Ijaz-ul-Haq.
